Myths: Busted

Thanks for taking our union myth busting quiz! In case you missed it, here is the answer key.

False.

Supporting workers strengthens harm reduction services. When workers are supported, clients receive better, more consistent care. Your working conditions are clients care conditions!

False

A union is you and your coworkers coming together to improve your workplace! Strengthening safety, support, and working conditions that enable safe, consistent care for you and the people you serve.

It depends.

Most people could use more money and we definitely aren’t here to police your budget by saying what is a little or a lot. The reality is dues are 1.7% of your base pay, and are 100% tax deductible, which means anything you pay in dues you get back when you file your taxes. SEIU-West members don’t pay any dues until they have approved their first contract. Would you vote yes for a contract that left you worse off?

It depends!

Without a union it will be up to you to enforce your rights on the job. You will need to know which parts of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, Human Rights Commission, and/or Employment Standards Act apply. Other staff at Prairie Harm Reduction have a union to enforce their workplace rights when needed. Don’t you deserve the same?

False

The truth is, you don’t have to dislike management or have a ton of problems to form a union. A union is just a formal way to work together with management as partners. It is a fact that union members enjoy more rights and protections on the job than non-union workers.
